Your obituary is in the papers!

Recently I was at a forum where we were challenged to write our obituary and it got me thinking about you! LOL! But seriously! If you passed on now, at this moment, what would your obituary read? More importantly, in those last moments before you pass on, when your whole life flashes in front of you, will you see a life that was meaningful to you? A life in which you were happy and a life that was well lived? A life in which you fulfilled every purpose for which you were put on earth?

After pausing to think about this for a bit, we were then challenged to re-write our obituary if as we’d like it to read if we had another ten years to live! What would you do differently, whose life will you touch, what would you be doing with the time allocated to you, where would you work and what would you be working on? What relationships will you nurture? Whose opinion will matter? How will your obituary now read? How will the images that flash through your mind in those final moments be different, will you feel a deep sense of satisfaction, knowing that you died empty? Life did not just happen to you, you happened to life? Haha! Isn’t that such an empowering thought? You happened to life!

Well I decided to share this because it struck a deep deep chord in me! It really has me thinking about what is important to me- what drives me. What am I convinced God put me here for and am I living my life in such a way that truly shows I want to achieve what I am on earth for?

I am reading a really interesting book called “How will you measure your life?” by Clay Christensen and he says “a strategy- whether in companies or in life- is created through hundreds of everyday decisions about how you spend your time, energy and money. With every moment of your time, every decision about how you spend your energy and your money, you are making a statement about what really matters to you. YOU CAN TALK ALL YOU WANT ABOUT HAVING A CLEAR PURPOSE AND STRATEGY FOR YOUR LIFE, BUT ULTIMATELY THIS MEANS NOTHING IF YOU ARE NOT INVESTING THE RESOURCES YOU HAVE IN A WAY THAT IS CONSISTENT WITH YOUR STRATEGY… If the decisions you make about where you invest your blood, sweat, and tears are not consistent with the person you aspire to be, you’ll never become that person”.

So this week, it’ll be a great exercise to write these 2 obituaries (don’t worry, thinking about death doesn’t kill you! True! If you think about it right, it helps you live in the most amazing way and guides your decisions so that you make decisions that are not based on the short-term)- write one that says where you are now and see if that satisfies you! If not, write the second one, the one you’d really like to be published about you when the time comes- a long long time from now, LOL! Write what matters to you, not to others- if what you would like is to have “her children rise up and call her blessed”- write that down and then like Christensen suggests, start to allocate your resources so that your children can actually call you blessed when the time comes… If you want it to read “died empty and lived life to the full” start today by defining what living life to the full means for you, does it mean writing books? Allocate your resources- time and talent even if its 30 minutes a day to writing. Does it mean painting? Do your day job but stay up at night to paint until painting can take care of you. Does it mean being a race car driver? What does it mean for you: decide it, know what it takes to get to it, then allocate your resources in such a way that you become it!

To conclude, I’ll share a thought I shared on Facebook this evening- “its in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped! As we go into a new week, decide to be happy, decide to be productive, decide to put in your best- not because of what you are paid or how your boss treats you, but because your work is a representation of you! Decide not to turn a blind eye, but to contribute to positive change! Decide to thrive because the Good Lord has blessed us with free will and the power to choose! Decide to choose life!” And for you on my blog, I’ll add decide to walk on the path that takes you closer to purpose and your destiny!

Ciao! Don’t forget to be awesome this week!

  1. I once read an obituary of a man who died full of dreams, things he wanted to do, places he wanted to go, people he wanted to meet, but he was so busy he didn’t get around to them.

Sometimes, I think of death, and I ask God to give me some more time, because I’m not ready. I’d like to have a child, I’d like to visit France, I’d like to go bungee jumping, I’d like to talk to someone about Him, But then I have one more day, and still, I never get around to doing those things

    • Aww! Don’t be that man please! Lets start with the pleasant, plan the trip to France, when do you want to go? Pick a date! Find out how much it’ll cost, how much do you have to save every month/ week to get it. Can you open a separate account for this? Then start planning! When you are there what will you do, as you make it more real and take concrete steps, it’ll happen for you and when you are done with that, do it with the next dream and the next and the next, till you “see” all your dreams come to pass! I’m rooting for you and I know you can create the future you want! Ciao!
