I Choose To Be Different!

Isn’t life amazing? Truly all of creation conspires to bring you whatever your predominant focus is! I just saw that demonstrated this morning. As is usual, I take out 30 minutes to an hour on Saturday morning to plan my week. As I mapped out my goals, set up a plan to make them happen and listed what steps I would have to take daily to ensure I met my goals, I found myself thinking, “I am different. A different set of rules apply to me, I am not affected in any negative way by the price of oil, the proposed further devaluation of the Naira, or inflation. I see opportunities where others see obstacles, I choose not to be common”. (LOL, I talk to myself a lot, because while being very optimistic, I am also quite the realist, so I identify what is real, what is a fact, but then I counter the facts with what I know to be true, that with my thoughts and outlook, I am in a position to change my destiny).

Anyhow, I told myself all these on Saturday and Sunday and get into work on Monday morning, only to find that a colleague of mine has dropped a book on my table for me to read! Guess whats on the very first page, a poem called “I DO NOT CHOOSE TO BE A COMMON MAN”. Haha! Talk about serendipity! Because, I do no think anything happens by chance, I decided to share the poem with you, just as a reminder that you can create the future you want to see. Sure the unexpected can happen, but how you react to it and the how you recover from it, are totally within your control. Like I always say, that thing that you feel will cripple you or stop you in your tracks, someone has been through it and gone on to thrive! You can too! So today, because its Monday and there is no fluff, I say to you “Man Up!” and enjoy:

(Excerpt from Common Sense, written in 1776)

I do not choose to be a common man.
It is my right to be uncommon … if I can.
I seek opportunity … not security.
I do not wish to be a kept citizen,
Humbled and dulled by having the State look after me.
I want to take the calculated risk,
To dream and to build. To fail and to succeed.
I refuse to barter incentive for a dole;
I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence;
The thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of Utopia.
I will not trade freedom for beneficence
Nor my dignity for a handout
I will never cower before any master
Nor bend to any threat.
It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid;
To think and act for myself,
To enjoy the benefit of my creations
And to face the world boldly and say:
This, with God’s help, I have done!

And Hajel says, ‘yes! So help me God!” Don’t forget to be awesome this week!

Cover photo is my tribute to Paris. The City of Lights will light up again. I pray for peace all over the world and in my country Nigeria. I believe that we are more the same than we are different, and that our differences are to be enjoyed, not hated. We can co-exist! In your own way, do what you can, to be part of the love that exists, not part of the hate that destroys. Enjoy my earlier posts on my visit to France here and here.
